Part 4

     The component I am comparing my issue to dignity of work and rights of workers which is a Catholic Social Teaching theme. If you were to look at my topic through this perspective you would see it is a serious problem. A belief inside this theme is that the dignity of work is to be respected. However, in the steel industry this is somewhat of a side note. For example, China doesn't respect this. Taking the steel industry into the automobile industry this is a serious problem. Chevrolet employs China to make automobile doors and other parts to many of their vehicles. China has copied these steel products so much that China's version and Chevrolet's could be interchangeable. Another point inside this theme is fair wages. Yet again this is another side note in the steel industry. If places like China were to practice fair trade it would reduce the issue.
     My dad works in the steel industry. He is a steel Foreman for two steel shops. Their sister business is located in Germany. However most of the steel they import is from China because it is the cheapest steel to buy. They try to fulfill the theme of dignity of work and rights or workers. As I mentioned above this isn't easy in the steel industry but the company name describes their motto. He works for a steel company called Metso B.E.S.T.. They hold true to the belief of productive work and fair wage. For example, if their are two welders and one is female and the other male they will be paid the same even though females in steel shops are uncommon. As for the productive work, if a steel shop has shipments going out everyday its a good sign. Even though they fulfill half of the theme its nearly impossible to fulfill the whole theme because of the state of the steel industry today.

Part 3 IR paradigm

A Realism perspective I choose the realism perspective because the primary source of realism is power. Each primary unit is after just that. The more power they have the more steel they can deal out increasing their profits. To get more power they essentially have to buy out or out market other units. This only benefits them in which they gain more power. In this case France is trying to buy out Germany's resources and vice versa. Bringing the subject of competing steel units closer to home we can look at the Untied States and China. We purchase steel and other raw materials from China because it's a very inexpensive way of meeting the quota. However, this gives more power to China because they gain our insight through making our various steel products for us and gaining profit. They use this insight to market the same items we do and make a profit. The importance of this is that instead of the United States or France getting the power and the profit that comes with it, the competitors are. One solution is fair trade. In this case equal power is distributed and both units somewhat win. All and all the steel unit is a big competition and in the end the unit with the most power will prevail.

Brief History:

     All of us are increasing the demand of steel and iron based products by incorporated them into our daily lives such as automobiles, steel buildings, railroads, and farm machinery. A greater amount of mineral resources has been used since 1910 than in all the recorded history in the world. The iron industry is confined into three main groups: United States, England, and Germany as well as France. They all have an essential part of the industry to bring to the table. The United States has the high-grade iron ore around Lake Superior and use of the great lakes for cheap transportation. Also there is abundance of coking coal and its in the vicinity of the consumers. England has low-grad iron from several districts which also have access to coking coal. And France and Germany have raw materials  and coal fields. These units are located closer to the coking coal and consumers rather than the iron ore deposits, which are imported from Sweden, northern Spain, and North Africa.

Problems Surrounding my Topic:

    Competition among the primary units for raw materials and markets, economic and political pressure because of the need for raw materials and markets, and struggle for control. An example would be the Franco-German unit.

Impacts of my Topic:

    It impacts the economics of both France and Germany. Also affecting the industry negatively by complicating production.

My Interest in this Topic:

    I'm interested in this topic because my dad is in the steel business, and their sister business is located in Germany. I want to learn more about it and really explore this topic to get a better understanding.

Long Term Impacts:

   There would be economic impact in the industry and cause further issues. Also the political issues go hand in hand. A primary unit will probably be lost.

Why isn't it Solved?

Introduction Into 4H

The Trials and Tribulations of 4H

    4H is a positive youth development organization that is cultivating a growing number of America's youth. The 4 H's in 4H stand for head, heart, hands and health. With an expansive network reaching every corner of the country, 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization. More than 6 million 4-H youth in urban neighborhoods, suburban schoolyards and rural farming communities stand out among their peers: building revolutionary opportunities and implementing community-wide change at an early age. So, my research intention is to see how 4H impacts the lives of today's youth through agriculture. To get an insight into a way a life that seems so backwoods and foreign today.

    Most of the people that are in 4H have been in it all their lives. In fact, most of the children involved in 4H had parents that were involved in it too. This show that its a way of life handed down through generations. There are many ways to get involved in 4H. You can choose from one of the many still projects, which can be anything from weaving a basket to growing the tallest sun flower. There are many prizes to be one from still project and even money, however the majority of kids in 4H would rather show their animals. Showing animals is the primary "bread winner" so to speak. You can sell you animals to bring in revenue for the upcoming year or even college. Along with still projects and showing animals they're are even collage scholarships to be won.

   I was raised in a rural area of Ohio. I've been exposed to 4H and the way of life that comes with it. My perspective is that these people think that farming is in their blood. They wait all year for the fair, just to show their animals. Its just the way of life out here. When interviewing my 4H member, they said that "Everyone lives on a farm or wishes they did.". When I asked him why he didn't want to comment about that on camera, he replied "Not everyone gets how hard it is to work on a farm. The toll it takes on you emotionally and physically is beyond imaginable. However after you look back on all that you've accomplished being apart of 4H you suddenly realize why it was worth it.".

Emily a sophomore at Cloverleaf sold her  1,336 pound steer for $2.50 per pound which is about $3,350 total.

The Election

4H's View

     The majority of  people in 4H are agriculturalists with small family owned farms. Small farms are in jeopardy of losing everything. With taxes being high, the cost of crops have gone down dramatically leaving them practically bankrupt. This years election will have an impact on 4H no matter who becomes President. As conventional farming grows, organic farming withers. This has a big impact on family owned farms. The Columbus famliy owns a farm on my road and is activally involved in 4H. When asked how the upcoming election would affect them they replied, "Mitt says that farmers and ranchers are the backbone of America, and when he was governer of Massachutsetts he made wise decsions concerning agriculture. I hope that he will make better decions concering us if he is elected in the future." However, the Bower family also owns a farm on my road and also involoved in 4H. When asked how the upcoming election would affect them thye replied "Obama gave 170 million to farmers effected by drought and ordered the government to buy tons of pork, lamb, chicken, and catfish. This showed that he really cared about us and the quality of Amercian food." So how will the elecion effect 4H? We'll just have to wait and see.

 Realism is the theory that everything is only as deep as the surface. An example is a hegemony overtaking a country to gain more power. They do this because they don't believe in trust, making alliances impossible. This also means that if any peace exists it was forced by the hegemony.
